The population of older adults is currently increasing faster than younger people. The United Nations projects that by 2020 there will be more people in the world over 65 years old than under 5 years old—for the first time in human history. This global trend is also true for the United States in particular. Data from the 2010 Census shows that the 45–54 population grew over 30% in the last 10 years, and now constitutes over 26% of the U.S. population. What this means is that in just a few years approximately one in three Americans will be over age 50.

Increased Micronutrient Needs

Many older adults do not receive recommended amounts of micronutrients from dietary intake alone. There is a wide variety of reasons for this increased nutritional risk, including:

Total food intake has been shown to progressively decrease with age. Even with this decrease, macronutrient status typically remains in the adequate range. Intake of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), however, often falls below adequate levels.

The physiological changes of the aging process result in less bioavailability of nutrients by reducing the body’s ability to synthesize, digest, and/or metabolize those nutrients.

85% of older adults have at least one chronic disease that affects the absorption, transport, metabolism, and elimination of nutrients.

Most older adults take one or more prescription medications, which can suppress appetite, increase metabolism, and/or promote malabsorption of nutrients.

Hospitalization, institutionalization, and/or home care can also interfere with nutrition. It has been estimated that greater than 50% of hospitalized adults 65 years of age or older are malnourished or at risk for becoming malnourished, and that 20–60% of home care patients and 40–85% of nursing home residents are malnourished.

Aside from a high-quality, bioavailable multiple vitamin/mineral complex, the following specific nutrients are particularly important for older and aging adults:

Vitamin A is required for healthy vision and immune function.

Vitamin C can prevent oxidative damage and also facilitate the absorption of iron.

Vitamin D is important in this population because the capacity to synthesize vitamin D in the skin is reduced in older adults.

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, and requires adequate biliary and pancreatic function for optimal absorption.

Vitamin K plays a key role in blood clotting, bone health, and the regulation of a variety of enzymatic reactions in the body.

Vitamin B12 deficiency affects about 30% of people 60 years of age or older. Folate is required for the metabolism of nucleic and amino acids, as well as DNA repair.

Calcium, together with vitamin D, is crucial in this population to support and maintain bone mass.

Magnesium is crucial for maintaining healthy muscle function and lean tissue mass, as well as bone mineral content, in older adults.

Zinc is particularly important in this population because immune function decreases with age, and even a mild zinc deficiency can compromise immune health and function.

Oxylent multivitamin supplement drink not only provides a comprehensive panel of high quality nutrients required for optimal health in older adults, but Oxylent also uniquely offers an effervescent delivery form that offers nearly 100% bioavailability—a crucial consideration for older adults given the prevalence of compromised absorption in this population.

Doctor’s Choice Eye Formula with Key Nutrients

We bring you some nutrition tips for healthy eyes based on an article by Evelyn Theiss, The Plain Dealer.

Good nutrition for eye health goes beyond carrots and their beta carotene, doctors now say, and the addition of some key nutrients can help avoid two leading causes of vision loss and blindness — age-related macular degeneration and cataracts — and aid conditions such as dry eyes.

The key nutrients include lutein (it helps with night vision), zeaxanthin (it protects the eyes from ultraviolet damage and prevents free-radical damage to the retina and lens), omega-3 oils (the DHA in them prevents retinal damage), zinc (good for preventing macular degeneration) and vitamin A (helps our night vision, but excessive doses can be toxic.)

Lutein, especially, is crucial when it comes to eye health as we age — it is present in the macula of the retina and helps us discern fine details. We are born with a certain amount, but since the body doesn’t produce it, the amount of lutein in your eyes depletes with age — so the only way to get it is by ingesting it.

Ideally, at least nine servings total of fruits and vegetables a day are recommended for your eyes and your general health, particularly green leafy vegetables.Yet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said less than 15 percent of the population consumes even five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

People who eat fish more than four times a week have a lower risk of macular degeneration than those who consume it less than three times a month. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to improve blood circulation to the eye.

Improving your nutrition is not necessarily easy. Take baby steps if you need to and consider taking supplements in case you decide to boost your totals using supplements.

The main nutrients shown to help you keep your eyes healthy as you age are those with the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin; essential fatty acids (omega-3s in particular); vitamins A, B, C and E; and zinc.

In the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, the National Eye Institute (of the National Institutes of Health) found that the combination of daily supplements to bring down the risk or progression of age-related macular degeneration is: 500 mg of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E, 15 mg of beta carotene, 80 mg of zinc oxide and 2 mg of copper, also known as cupric acid. For the second ARED study now under way, the level of zinc has been cut back to 25 mg.

As always, it’s best to talk to your doctor for advice before starting a new regimen.

Baby Dha

Nordic Naturals purity and safety is unparalleled that they have bravely introduced a DHA formula for infants 5 – 35 lb.

This is just in time as new clinical study shows that Omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) when added to infant formula may improve the visual acuity of the infants. Doses of 0.32 and 0.64 % DHA led to improvements in eye health of infants, compared to infants fed non-supplemented formula, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

DHA, which constitutes approximately 40% of the brain, supports brain development during the last trimester of pregnancy when the unborn child’s demand for neurological growth increases greatly. After child birth, the infant continues to need adequate DHA source from breast milk or supplementation for proper development of the brain, eyes, and nervous and immune system.

Nordic Naturals Baby DHA:

Supports the proper development of the brain, eyes, and nervous and immune systems in babies 5–35 lbs*

Supports learning and language abilities*

With added natural vitamin D3 for further support of healthy development*

The measured dropper makes it easy to add to formula or food.

Dosage depends on baby weight. The following table is provided as guideline:

At the request of the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) backed up DHA-related brain and eye health claims for infants.

EFSA’s Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) said DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) levels of 100mg of per day were appropriate for 7-24 month-old infants along with 200mg per day for pregnant and lactating women.

The following are the DHA Claims supported by EFSA’s panel:

“DHA intake can contribute to normal brain development of the foetus, infant and young children”
“DHA intake can contribute to normal development of the eye of the foetus, infant and young children”
“DHA intake can contribute to the visual development of the infant”
The NDA said any more specific brain and eye functions would need to be backed by further science.

“Please note that developmental steps are not directly related to cognitive functions as it may depend on brain domains and areas,” NDA head of unit, Dr Juliane Kleiner wrote in the advice. “Therefore to support a claim for DHA and cognitive function more studies using different parameters would be needed.”

DENVER, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ — Researchers are seeing more benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3s), such as their ability to help prevent and slow age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an eye disease that is the leading cause of severe vision loss in older people. Fish consumption also seems to benefit seniors by thwarting dementia and the omega-3s in fish may improve cognition in adolescents and children. New research in these areas is described in the September 2009 PUFA Newsletter and Fats of Life e-newsletters.

In 10 years of follow-up, the Blue Mountains Eye Study in Australia reported that older adults who ate fish weekly and those with the highest intakes of omega-3s from all sources were significantly less likely to develop early AMD. In U.S. research, late stage AMD was delayed in people who had the highest intakes of seafood omega-3s plus a diet with a low glycemic index (minimal impact on blood sugar levels after consumption).

Eating fish regularly also seems to help prevent dementia. A large study in several low- and middle-income countries found that fish consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of dementia in adults aged 65 or older.

“Fish consumption appears to be protective in most, if not all, populations,” said Joyce Nettleton, D.Sc., editor of the PUFA Newsletter and Fats of Life. “This has clear implications for reducing the burden of mental illness in aging populations worldwide.”

Seafood omega-3s may benefit mental health and brain function in younger people, too, according to other research. In toddlers, those whose mothers had higher intakes of the omega-3 DHA had greater attention and were less easily distracted compared with toddlers of low DHA mothers. Older children who consumed a spread enriched with seafood omega-3s for six months had significantly improved verbal learning ability and memory. In Sweden, adolescent males who ate fish more than once a week scored significantly higher on intelligence assessments than males who ate fish less than once a week.

“These studies are among the first to document cognitive improvements with greater fish or omega-3 consumption in childhood and adolescence,” Nettleton noted. “It appears that omega-3s may benefit people of all ages.”
